Pre-Workout Supplements: What to Check Before You Buy

Pre-workout products can look complicated because formulas often contain several ingredients in one serving. A better way to compare them is to work through the label step by step and decide what fits your training, schedule and personal tolerance.

Check the serving size first

Always start with the recommended serving size. A tub can contain a scoop that represents a full serving, half serving or another amount depending on the product. Comparing products without checking serving size can make ingredient amounts look more similar or more different than they really are.

Look at caffeine clearly

Many pre-workout formulas contain caffeine, but the amount can vary widely. Check the label rather than assuming that every pre-workout has the same strength. Your total caffeine intake can also include coffee, energy drinks and other supplements used during the day.

If you are sensitive to caffeine, train late in the day, use medication, are pregnant, or have a medical condition, discuss stimulant use with an appropriate healthcare professional before using a caffeinated supplement.

Read the full ingredient list

Do not judge a product only by the front label. The ingredient panel tells you what is actually included and in what amounts when those amounts are disclosed. Some products focus heavily on stimulants, while others combine ingredients intended for different aspects of a workout experience.

More ingredients does not automatically mean better

A long formula is not necessarily a better formula. What matters is whether the product fits your needs and whether you understand what you are taking. If you already use other supplements separately, check for overlapping ingredients so you are not unintentionally stacking the same compounds.

Consider when you train

Someone training early in the morning may evaluate caffeine differently from someone training close to bedtime. Your routine matters. A pre-workout should fit around sleep, food and training rather than create a new problem elsewhere in the day.

Start from the label and your own tolerance

Follow the manufacturer’s directions and avoid increasing servings simply because a product does not “feel” strong enough. Sensation is not the same thing as effectiveness, and tolerance can change over time.
